The funeral procession for Kim Jong-Il was carried out with military precision and when a handful of dawdlers messed up those regimented lines, they were eliminated. From the photo, that is.

A photo released by the North Korea’s state news agency and transmitted by the Germany-based european pressphoto agency is slightly different from a photo taken at nearly the identical moment and released by Japanese agency Kyodo News.

The Japanese picture captured a half-dozen men near a camera on a tripod lingering behind the line of mourners on the left side of the boulevard as the motorcade passed by.

New iPhone App Lets Users Uncover Fake Media Images

With imaging programs like Adobe Photoshop becoming increasingly sophisticated, the digital manipulation of media images is becoming more commonplace. But a new iPhone application called Shopped? is giving people the ability to distinguish fact from fiction when it comes to the photos they encounter in everyday media.

"Today, there's more skepticism regarding the authenticity of images that appear online and in newspapers and magazines," says Michael Thomason, managing member of Everyday Apps, the software vendor behind Shopped?. "Whether it's a celebrity photo from the tabloids or a snapshot from a political news piece, a startling number of photos are doctored before they go to press. The American public values the truth in media reporting, and I've given them a tool to uncover that truth."

US Moves Toward Banning Photoshop In Cosmetics Ads

The National Advertising Division is taking further steps to restrict the use of misleading image manipulation in cosmetics ads.

In a landmark move, the industry watchdog has decided to ban an ad by Covergirl for their NatureLuxe Mousse Mascara.

The decision may spell the beginning of the end of highly digitally manipulated images - including those that slim down models or change body shapes in order to sell products.

Now, ‘super Photoshop’ lets novices add fake objects to any still photo

London: A new technique has been developed by a programmer that lets fakers add anything to photos in minutes and give “real-looking” results by simply drawing a few lines on the screen.

According to Kevin Karsch, a PhD student at the University of Illinois and the creator of the new “super Photoshop”, even “novice” users can achieve “professional results” with the use of this technique.

Karsch describes his software as “a method to realistically insert synthetic objects into existing photographs without requiring access to the scene, special equipment, multiple photographs, time lapses, or any other aids.”

He also said that while it’s easy to digitally remove objects from scenes, it’s much harder to insert them without people spotting that something’s up.

Magazine advertisements for alcohol and cigarettes come with warning labels. Now, some groups suggest that the celebrity photos should, too.

A number of researchers and government regulators want photographs of movie stars and models to come with warnings that say the photos have been extensively altered with retouching software, such as Adobe Photoshop.

The idea stems from scientific research that found that vulnerable consumers, particularly children and teens, might be fooled by the photos' convincing illusions of perfection and suffer negative physical and mental health consequences as a result.

Adobe Buys Efficient Frontier to Expand in Web Marketing

Adobe Systems Inc. said it would buy online-advertising company Efficient Frontier to gain software that lets marketers place ads on Google Inc.’s and Facebook Inc.’s websites.

The deal would expand Adobe’s palette of tools for online advertisers and complement software it acquired with Omniture Inc. two years ago, Adobe said in a statement. Closely held Efficient Frontier, based in Sunnyvale, California, sells software that lets advertisers buy keywords on Google, place ads on Facebook, and purchase so-called display ads around the Web. Adobe, based in San Jose, California, didn’t disclose the price and said the transaction would be completed by February.
